>>>#12/12/19 Matters pertaining to Leadership

Let's talk about my weakest subject which is leadership.

I was a lousy leader.  I believe in empowerment.  But empowerment comes with trust and trust works with trustworthy individuals.

Several negative experiences flashed inside my head.  I'm not going to dwell in it.  Instead I'll talk from the perspective of personal empowerment which then leads to people empowerment.

If we look at a leader as an extraordinary person, then the key differentiator between a leader and a follower is that  little extra.  A leader must have a big heart.

A person who have the scarcity mentality cannot be a leader.  So is a person critical of people making mistakes.  There is a caveat though, mistakes should [] (not) be repeated.  If that happens then the Carrot and the Stick Principle still applies.

A great leader pull not push.  Imagine a leader [i]s (as) a person holding a rope.  You pull a rope, *[you] you don't push it.

* I got a feeling you like this topic much.  Well alright, let me give you the perspective from both sides of the fences

Let's look at a leader from the followers perspective.  A follower tend to look up to a leader.  Therefore when you look at a leader, chances are his fault is more glaring.  That's because you are looking at him from the worm hole.  Everything is magnified from that point of view.  He is one lone figure.

However from the perspective of a leader, he is looking down at the whole team.  Therefore his perspective is from the bird's eye view.  Hence he cannot attend to everybody's whims and fancies.  He has to be broad in his perspective.

You *[w]ay think at times that a leader has nothing better to do than breathing behind your neck.  That's because a leader is accountable for the actions of his followers.  If the followers screw up it's the leader's neck that will be chopped!  Therefore he may seem idle in doing the mundane tasks but be mindful his scope of responsibility trickles down all the way to the very bottom.

*  I know baby, it's frustrating when you already did your very best.  But hey, go the extra mile honey.

Therefore leadership style must vary according to the situation.  In a normal situation his approach is consultative and prescriptive.  However in a crisis he got to switch to directive and authoritative.  My common style is negotiative.

So we can always plan but not all the time things works according to the plan.  That's when a leader should exercise flexibility.  A good leader is a Swiss Army Knife.  He has many facades and many solutions to the problem.  This requires intelligence and experience.

I used to be a very temperamental person.  I was a hothead when I was a Young Turk.  Nowadays I no longer have the fury.  However I still use anger as a tool.  When pushed to a corner I will draw my swords.  So don't mess with me.  However anger now is a resource.  Just like fire; kecil-kecil jadi kawan, bila besar jadi lawan (basically this means keep fire small or else it will turn from a friend to a foe).

A leader is not perfect.  However he still strive for perfection DESPITE the imperfections.

The burden of leadership is too overwhelming.  Imagine this, when you are single all you need to worry is feeding your own belly.  But when you become a leader, you got to think of the other mouths to feed.  Always when I was heading Sharudin Jamal & Associates, I think of how to take care of my employees salaries FIRST.  So I was the last to get paid.  That was why at one time I was behind my grocery allowance to Lizzie by SIX MONTHS!

Honey, I know you have concern about the dinosaur brain in your organization, but then he has to take care of the pack.  Otherwise he will become extinct LMAO.

Now that you are a leader, you will realize that a good leader must begin with you being a good follower.  I was a bad leader because I don't believe in being a follower.  Well, the price is me being a loner.

You can't do that honey.  You work in teams.  Remember as a member of a team you got to mobilize everybody - Together Everybody Achieves More (TEAM).

This is my favorite quote on leadership:

I do believe in the end there should be a balance in our actions.  You squeeze a bird too tight it will die, too loose it will flee.  It's a juggling act really.

One final reminder...  YOU GOT TO HAVE THICK FACE AND BLACK HEART as a follower.  Then only you will rise to be a great leader ;)

Later honey, I'm gonna say hi to KG.
